Mach and Froude Numbers on Mars

چکیده
Abstract Mars atmospheric global circulation models exhibit transonic jet streaks during northern winter, which motivates this study of the Mach number, Ma (the ratio flow speed to sound), and Froude Fr buoyancy waves), as a function season location. Two reanalyses spanning Years (MY) 24 32 are used input, EMARS OpenMARS. The study’s vertical coordinate is potential temperature, θ , ranging from = 400 1100 K (from z ≈ 66 km); floor set lowest level that avoids intersecting mountains. Area-weighted means standard deviations 5 yr temporal using complete years MY 25, 26, 29, 30, 31 compared. OpenMARS show general agreement below 700 ( 53 km), where observational constraints strongest, but can vary significantly at higher levels. Both contain in every winter sampled. signal roughly twice number signal, expected temperature lapse rate small compared dry adiabatic rate. numbers similar both larger year-to-year variability Maps indicate depression between main peaks Tharsis Mare Boreum than Australe. conclusion atmosphere routinely operates compressible regime (0.3 < 0.8), unlike Earth. Aspects all flow-speed meteorology discussed.

Vortex ring refraction at large Froude numbers 1
Submitted for the MAR10 Meeting of The American Physical Society Vortex ring refraction at large Froude numbers1 KERRY KUEHN, MATTHEW MOELLER, MICHAEL SCHULZ, DANIEL SANFELIPPO, Wisconsin Lutheran College — We have experimentally studied the impact of a planar axisymmetric vortex ring, incident at an oblique angle, upon a sharp gravity-induced interface separating two fluids of differing densit...
متن کاملAn example of low Mach (Froude) number effects for compressible flows with nonconstant density (height) limit
Abstract The purpose of this work is to study an example of low Mach (Froude) number limit of compressible flows when the initial density (height) is almost equal to a function depending on x. This allows us to connect the viscous shallow water equation and the viscous lake equations. More precisely, we study this asymptotic with well prepared data in a periodic domain looking at the influence ...
متن کاملStudy on Mach Reflection and Mach Configuration
Shock reflection is a fundamental phenomenon in studying compressible flow. Since Ernst Mach first studied the reflection phenomena of shock waves in 1878 [6] great amount of research works on such phenomena, mainly experiments and computations, was proceeded. In gas dynamics when a shock wave meets an obstacle in its propagation process the shock reflection occurs generally. There are various ...
متن کاملCritical conditions and composite Froude numbers for layered flow with transverse variations in velocity
A condition is derived for the hydraulic criticality of a 2-layer flow with transverse variations in both layer velocities and thicknesses. The condition can be expressed in terms of a generalized composite Froude number. The derivation can be extended in order to obtain a critical condition for an N-layer system. The results apply to inviscid flows subject to the usual hydraulic approximation ...
متن کاملA preconditioned solver for sharp resolution of multiphase flows at all Mach numbers
A preconditioned five-equation two-phase model coupled with an interface sharpening technique is introduced for simulation of a wide range of multiphase flows with both high and low Mach regimes. Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact (HLLC) Riemann solver is implemented for solving the discretized equations while tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) interface sharpening method is applied ...
